Importance of Gestational Diabetes Diets During and After Pregnancy

Gestational diabetes is a very serious disease which can’t be treated irresponsibly. It’s a very important concern for future moms because their health and health of their babies is under risk. And from the point of time when they find out about pregnancy they are responsible for the life and health of their little ones.

Gestational diabetes can declare itself in different forms and symptoms. Luckily in most cases this type of diabetes disappears after baby delivery and does not have any further negative consequences for both moms and babies.

The most often applied way of treatment for gestational diabetes is following a diet. Mainly all of them are aimed at reducing the number of daily calorie, carbohydrates and sugar intake. Women need to eat the right amount of carbohydrates, protein, and fat while they are pregnant. Of course it’s a rule for all pregnant women because right feeding for moms means right feeding for fetus which stimulates its normal growth and development. High blood glucose levels that are not treated during pregnancy can cause problems for moms and their babies. Gestational diabetes does not cause a baby to have diabetes. However, if left untreated, gestational diabetes can cause a baby to produce too much insulin and gain too much weight, increasing the risk of premature delivery.

One of the basic principles of gestational diabetes diets is carbohydrate counting. It means that pregnant women have to count the amount of carbohydrates they eat every day, and have scheduled meal plan day after day. Meal planning should center on eating several small meals throughout the day. Small, frequent meals support the stabilization of healthy blood sugars much better than one or two large meals. For those women who require insulin to treat their gestational diabetes, the quantity and frequency of carbohydrate needs to be matched to the insulin requirements accordingly.

Gestational diabetes diet has to be carefully planed by a doctor who is able to watch its effectiveness and make timely changes based on regular blood, urine, and other analysis, and also taking into account individual peculiarities of women and the way they feel following a diet. Since gestational diabetes can be completely and effectively controlled with diet alone, and the fact that oral hypoglycemic medications are not recommended during this delicate time, it is important to discuss any questions with a nutritionist.

Diets are important not only during pregnancy months when a mom is diagnosed gestational diabetes, but also after a baby is born. First of all it’s necessary for proper breast feeding. Moms should watch carefully not only how much they eat but what exactly they eat as well because their food is ‘transformed’ into breast milk which is the main food for their newborn babies during their first months of life. By the way gestational diabetes is not a reason to refuse from breast feeding. It’s a fact that breast feeding helps turn blood sugar to normal levels and keep it that way.
